Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board -
History: Although first colonized in the 1600's, it was not until 1954 that a 3 ½ mile bridge was built connecting Dauphin Island to the mainland. During this development phase, two organizations were created. The Property Owners Association (POA) was formed to encourage the purchase of lots, and was provided common lands and other resources to benefit those buying property here. The Park and Beach Board was created to represent the interests of Dauphin Island non-property owners. Mission Statement explains: The mission of the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board is to provide family recreation opportunities to all citizens of Alabama. Promote tourism to the area and in harmony with public use, protect the natural environment of our properties. With assistance from federal, state and county sources; the sand dunes covering the walls of Fort Gaines were excavated, the Campground was established, fishing piers and boat launches were built, beach and picnic park developments begun, and in 1961 what is now the Audubon Sanctuary created as a wildlife refuge. |
